March 2011
Welcome

Welcome

Hello, Nextworking friends! It’s March which means we’re finally on the homestretch to opting for sidewalks instead of skyways and sandals in lieu of scarves. Can we get an “Amen!”?!

A big time thank you to the nearly 300 of you who joined us for our 6th Annual Wine Tasting at Five Event Center on January 28. It was a fun-filled, networking-rich night of wine sampling and relationship building. Many of you commented that it was our best wine tasting yet… only to be topped by next year’s event, of course!

If you’re looking for the chance to meet one of our international Nextworking members, tips for a flawless resume, and access to the hottest job opportunities in the Cities, this issue of The Spot will not disappoint! We encourage you to enjoy it with as much enthusiasm as you did last week’s pints of green beer. Cheers!

P.S. Thank you to those of you who took time out of your day to complete our brief membership survey - we appreciate your insight as we work on event plans for 2011. Stay tuned to future issues of The Spot to see what’s on tap this year!

Spotlight

If you’ve never met someone who is practically bursting with positive energy and enthusiasm for life, allow us to introduce you to Nick Raykov. On second thought, perhaps his affinity for double-espressos has something to do with this fella’s energy level? Regardless, Nick’s natural ability to strike up a comfortable conversation with anyone and his friendly personality make him an asset to our Steering Committee and the Nextworking community as a whole. As a Lead Analyst at Thomson Reuters, Nick works as part of the Corporate Financial Planning and Analysis team managing the free cash flow forecasting and reporting processes for Thomson’s legal product businesses.

Read on to hear about Nick’s adventure-filled life, his best vacation, his flight navigation experience, and his post-high school journey to Moorhead, Minnesota from his home country of Bulgaria. Come on folks, when was the last time you heard a “Bulgaria to Concordia” story?!

SNI Companies, the parent company of all four of our Minneapolis staffing divisions (Certes Financial Pros, SNI Financial, Accounting Now, and SNI Technology) was recently named to the 2011 Best of Staffing Client List.

This prestigious award distinguishes staffing firms who outperformed the industry’s benchmark for service. If you’re looking to make a strategic career move, engage with our recruiters and experience for yourself what sets us apart. Your career is too important to work with anyone less than the best!

On the Spot

Like your favorite pair of flip flops after a winter’s hibernation, it might be time to dust off and re-visit your resume, too. With the economy beginning to thaw after months of stone-cold compensation (if you were lucky enough to have a job) and hiring freezes, many over-worked, under-appreciated professionals are taking a good look at their career options. In fact, a recent CNN.com article cited 84% of employees plan to look for a new position in 2011 (which is up from 60% in 2010). If you’re one of them, make sure your resume conveys all that you have to offer a potential employer and is not a reflection of carelessness.

Avoid these resume no-nos!

What They've Learned

“Building a strong network and maintaining those relationships can be the most valuable asset when it comes to advancing your career. An old saying comes to mind ‘it’s not what you know but who you know.’ Too often people don’t invest the time and energy into maintaining and expanding their networks until it’s too late and end up being forced into making career choices that lack long term potential. Part of managing a successful career is building both a strong internal and external network, and being open to opportunities even if you feel comfortable in your current position. You always have the most leverage and are able to make the best long term decisions when you are not in a position of necessity.
