On the Spot
- Be positive and stay energized – desperation isn’t an attractive trait.
- Keep busy and seize opportunities
- Network, network, network! Research shows that more than 60% of all jobs are found through networking. In addition, it also allows you to find out about jobs that are never advertised – which accounts for 80% of all available jobs.
- Attend job fairs – the purpose is not to ask for a job, but to develop relationships that might lead to a job, research the companies in which you have interest and prepare open-ended questions to ask representatives. Also view other job seekers as valuable networking contacts.
- Plan and practice a “Me in 30 Seconds” statement to advertise your skills and experiences. It should include a brief personal introduction with your career objective, three or four specific accomplishments that prove you meet or exceed the requirements of the position, and a few character traits that set you apart from typical applicants.
- Learn a new skill or take continuing education classes. Be sure to keep all certifications up to date.
- Volunteer – this is a great way to fill in gaps on your resume, form new relationships, and help a good cause. It could even lead to employment.
- Seek out informational interviews – getting a more accurate picture of a company or position will help you decide if this target really matches your talents, passion, interest, and strengths.
- Take advantage of all job search resources, such as the library, community organizations, and places of worship.
- Use this time to reflect
- Explore your passions, possibly identify a new direction. After all, Confucius said, “Choose a job you love, and you will never have to work a day in your life.”
Economists say that when the economy takes a dive, it is common for people to turn to their inner entrepreneur and make their own work. During the dot-com era many companies were launched – one of which was Google. The Internet has given people an extraordinary tool not just to market their ideas but also to find business partners and suppliers.
- Keep aware of the latest business news, especially within your local marketplace. When you’re informed and well-educated on what’s happening in business, you have more to offer.
Dave Schneider and Jackie Anderson would be happy to offer additional guidance in your job search, so don’t be a stranger. Certes is here to serve you!
