In his current role as Senior External Reporting Analyst at Target Corporation, Jason assists with compiling and reviewing the Forms 10-K and 10-Q. Other responsibilities include performing and documenting GAAP research, maintaining internal controls, and acting as an audit contact.

PricewaterhouseCoopers alum, Jason made the leap to industry after four years in public accounting. His biggest challenge transitioning from public? Getting to know the industry. “The deadlines aren’t as extreme but the new challenge becomes getting to know the business on a much deeper level.”

Exciting things currently happening within your organization: “There is always something exciting and new going on at Target! We are all about a fast, fun and friendly environment.”

Personal accomplishments of note: Like many fellow Nextworkers, obtaining the CPA license was a very proud moment for Jason. However, few have probably gone to such lengths to attain their certification. “I was in a bad car accident just days before taking the exam the first time. Needless to say, I didn’t do well. I then started at PwC and the intense schedule kept the exam on the back burner. I really buckled down and focused on the exam once I moved to Green Tree but I just kept barely passing. Finally I hit the window where I had only one option left before the 150 hour rule kicked in. I passed on my last shot and it was (one of) the happiest moments of my life.”

Where we can find you when you’re not working: When the weather is nice and the grass is green, you can find Jason on a golf course. In the winter, he likes to play basketball, broomball, and cheer on the MN sports teams as often as he can!

Favorite singer: Jason is a big fan of Coldplay and Dave Matthews Band. “I really enjoy Dave Matthews Band concerts at Alpine Valley.”

Best vacation: Jason and his wife love to travel and so he is torn between trips to Maui and Costa Rica. “My wife and I just took our honeymoon in December to Costa Rica. Both locations have great weather for thawing out during the Minnesota winter, plus lots of fun tours and activities.”

Something you’ve done that would surprise people: Jason spent a semester of college studying business in London. “I was able to travel all over Western Europe and learned quite a bit about the global economy.” His favorite travel destination abroad? Interlaken, Switzerland.

What have you enjoyed the most about Nextworking? “I’m a big advocate of how important it is to network with other people. You just never know whom you might cross paths with during your career. Nextworking has opened the door for me to meet other professionals in the accounting and finance industry and I’m grateful for that opportunity.”

What has been your favorite Nextworking event and why? Jason really enjoyed bowling at the Park Tavern last spring. “I thought it was a great atmosphere for networking and having lots of fun at the same time.”
