Welcome
|
|
. . . . .
Greetings, friends! We are excited to
announce that Nextworking is three years old
and with our birthday this year comes some
"changing of the guard" opportunities.
Deepen your involvement in Nextworking by
helping guide future event planning while
also gaining valuable leadership and
networking skills. The Nextworking
Steering Committee will have six seats
opening this fall and we're currently
accepting nominations to fill these
vacancies. If you're an active member of
Nextworking with an outgoing, friendly
personality; proven leadership experience;
and a passion for meeting new people, we want
to hear from you! Ideal candidates will also
be able to commit to quarterly meetings plus
event attendance over a three-year term.
Interested? Contact Melissa for nomination
information at mmlakar@certespros.com.
Many of you have mentioned that time is a
factor in your ability to network and we've
responded by launching a Nextworking group on
LinkedIn. Build connections on your own time
by clicking on the LinkedIn logo. We know
privacy is important to you, so only approved
members will be allowed to join this group.
In the spirit of growing older and wiser, we
have added a "What They've Learned" section
to The Spot. Each quarter, we will feature an
experienced accounting or finance
professional answering a question that we
commonly get asked by Nextworking members. Enjoy!

Nextworking Night Out
|
|
. . . . .
Many of us agree that the bowling greens at
Brit's
Pub are the place to be most nights
in the summer, but it will be a particularly
hot spot on Wednesday, September 10.
Join us as we close down the rooftop and open
up our more competitive sides for a little
friendly lawn bowling under the stars.
Drinks, appetizers, and plenty of fun will be
on tap as you mingle with teammates and
create new connections. Mark your calendar
today and be sure to register when you
receive our exclusive invite. This event is
known to fill up quickly. Cheers, mate!

Member Spotlight

. . . . .
Mitch Walter is an active CPA and Audit
Senior at Ernst
and
Young where he works primarily with asset
management clients conducting the external
audit work of hedge funds and mutual funds.
Armed with a degree in accounting and a minor
in finance from Minnesota State University -
Moorhead, Mitch joined the E&Y team as a
Staff Auditor immediately following
graduation. He enjoys working with and, more
importantly, learning from a variety of
people in his job. With several exciting
changes on the horizon for Mitch, we were
jazzed to get the chance to learn more about
how he's landed where he is today,
favorite free time activities, and a love for
a specific music genre that really threw us
for a loop!

On the Spot
|
|
. . . . .
Open nearly any business magazine or
newspaper today and chances are you'll find
an article focused on the Millennial
generation (those of us born after 1980) and
the attitudes, work ethic, and expectations
we bring to the workplace. Also receiving ink
these days is the perception that our
generation is hopping jobs as frequently as
we change our Facebook profiles. Although
that's a bit of a stretch, it did prompt us
to wonder what is an appropriate length of
time to stay in a job? Come along as we tap
into the minds of our resident experts to
answer that question and provide other
helpful tips for building a strong resume and
expanding your skills without job hopping.

What They've Learned
|
|
1 2 3 4 5
"I believe that early in your career,
particularly at the analyst level, it is
important to get as much experience as you
can since movement often becomes more
difficult as you move up in an organization.
Take every opportunity available to expose
yourself to different businesses within your
company, expand your knowledge, and
provide financial support to various
functional areas (i.e. sales, marketing,
manufacturing, R&D, supply chain, corporate,
etc.). This broad experience will benefit you
in the long run since it will give you a "big
picture" understanding of the various
financial drivers in the decision making
process and how the business really operates.
This is critical knowledge to becoming a
strong business partner who truly adds value
to the organization."

Best Kept Secret
|
|
. . . . .
With the price of gas at record highs and
other lifestyle costs on the rise, even
dedicated caffeine addicts like ourselves are
considering cutting back on our daily grande
latte habits. Which makes this edition's Best
Kept Secret such a pleasure to share with our
Nextworking friends. With little more than a
good sense of music appreciation and an
understanding of what time the meters stop
running downtown, we humbly deliver to you a
summer's worth of after work and weekend fun.
